The Park is the site of a lesser known Battle of Hoover’s Gap that was fought in the Civil War during the Unions 1863 campaign for the Control of Middle Tennessee. It is also the site of dozens of unknown Confederate soldiers killed at Hoover’s Gap.

“The Battle of Hoover’s Gap (24 June 1863) was the principal battle in the Tullahoma Campaign, in which Union General William S. Rosecrans drove General Braxton Bragg’s Confederates out of Central Tennessee. Rosecrans’ feigned move on the western end of the Confederate line had left the eastern mountain passes lightly defended, and Colonel John T. Wilder’s mounted infantry achieved total surprise when they attacked Hoover’s Gap. Success was attributed both to Rosecrans’ brilliant deception tactics and the high morale of Wilder’s ‘Lightning Brigade’, equipped with the new Spencer repeating rifle, which totally disoriented the enemy”… read more – Wikipedia

Built in 1862-1863 atop Figuers Bluff on the Harpeth River on the Nashville Railroad, it encompasses about 275,000 square feet. It is named for Union Gen. Gordon Granger, and played a significant role in The Battle of Franklin in 1864.

The Stones River National American Civil War Battlefield in Murfreesboro, Tennessee. This American battlefield is home to the oldest Civil War monument in the United States of American: The Hazen Monument on tour stop #5 of this virtual tour.

The battlefield property is divided into two separate sites: the Main Battlefield off Thompson Lane, and McFadden’s Ford a few miles north off US Highway 41 / 70.

The Main Park Battlefield is located at 3501 Old Nashville Highway Murfreesboro, TN 37129.
